As we said, you really need to exercise caution when using the API, since you are not afforded much of the protection that you get when you use the Application Builder interface. However, what you lose in protection you definitely gain in control. You saw how easy it is to programmatically create a page item. Now imagine that we had to add a page item (or perhaps a region) to 10, 20, or 100 different pages in the application (we could use page zero for the region; however, we might require a distinct item on the page for some reason, too). Imagine how much time that would take to do manually via the Application Builder versus programmatically looping around one of the APEX Dictionary views (for example, apex_application_pages) to extract the page number and then calling the create_page_item procedure. You will have turned something that would take minutes (or potentially hours) into something that completes in mere seconds.

The -C option forces mkf s. ocfs to format all blocks in the partition. Depending on the size of the partition, this process can take a long time. The - F option forces reformatting of a partition that has previously been formatted for OCFS. The -b option specifies the block size in kilobytes. If you do not specify this option, then the default value of 128KB will be used. Remember that the disk subsystem block size, OCFS block size, and database block size should all be even multiples of each other to avoid inducing performance problems in the database. For example, the following is a typical mount command that forces the formatting of an OCFS volume on device /dev/sdal with a block size of 128KB; the volume is then mounted on directory /u02 with an owner of oracle, group of dba, and permissions of rwxrwxr-x:

Fast Connection Failover (FCF) Fast Connection Failover (FCF) was introduced in Oracle 10.1 and relies on the ONS infrastructure. It works with integrated connection pools in application servers and clients and is used to prevent new connections being directed to failed nodes or instances. When a failure occurs, the application is immediately notified of the change in cluster configuration by ONS, and the connection pool can react by directing new connections to surviving instances. This behavior is performed internally by the connection pool and is transparent to both the developer and the application. Oracle clients that provide FCF include Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), Oracle Call Interface (OCI), and the ODP.NET CLI.

Virtual IP (VIP)

In Oracle 10.1 and above, a RAC database instance can be accessed through a virtual IP address (VIP) address, which is an alternate public address that client connections use instead of the standard public IP address. The VIP address is a spare IP address for each node that belongs to the same subnet as the public network. Clients should always specify the VIP address, as opposed to the real IP address, when attempting to connect to an instance. If a node fails, then the node's VIP address fails over to another node. Clients attempting to connect to the VIP will be redirected to another node. This eliminates some of the issues with TCP timeouts, which were prevalent in Oracle 9/ RAC and caused long delays when clients attempted to connect to failed nodes. VIP runs as a node application that is configured in the OCR and can be started and stopped with the other node applications using SRVCTL. VIP can be configured using the Virtual IP Configuration Assistant (VIPCA) utility.
